This course covers the foundations of the analog black-and-white photographic process. Students will use a pinhole camera, 35mm camera, and a 4×5 camera in manual mode, learning principles of exposure such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Students will expose film, develop it by hand, and use the negatives to make traditional gelatin silver prints in the darkroom.
Working directly with Richard Tsosie, a leading contemporary (Diné [Navajo]) jeweler, you will design patterns and create colorful collages in semi-precious stones. You will learn how to operate lapidary equipment to cut, grind, and polish stones to set into the silver form of your choice, such as bracelets, pendants, belt buckles, and rings, which you will create!
